The Kitchner Lotus 47GT

This automobile started out as one of three Lotus Type 47GT prototypes, SN P5-P15-R1.  Sometime in the early 70's it was purchased by Tony Kitchner Race Developments, and underwent extensive modifications, becoming a project car similar to the Shelby Cobra in concept.  Changes included a Formula 5000 engine and drive train, TR-4 hubs, and a (!) sunroof (gone).  With a 5 liter V8 pumping out 280 BHP, it's performance as reported in Motoring News was "breathtaking".   At some point, the car sold to a buyer in here in the States who crashed it. When I bought it from a race driver in 1972, it was represented as the 47GT prototype driven by John Miles during the 1966-67 season.
The car's engine is a Ford HiPo 289, with Weber 48 IDA carburetors on a GT-40 intake manifold, a bundle-of-snakes exhaust system, and a ZF 5DS 25 dash 0 transaxle. Pretty much the same configuration as the GT40 MK I.  Ford's published 1970 dyno data  for this combination indicated about 365 BHP @ 7500 RPM.  Because of a low final drive ratio and 13" tires, top speed isn't going to be much over 140 MPH, but then the aerodynamics are probably not safe for much above that anyway.  I'm in the process of rebuilding the Webers and linkage, making a cold air box (turkey pan), and replacing the brake and clutch lines.  Dash and electrics are next on the list, and I'm still tracking down some vintage parts to replace a few that have disappeared along the way. With luck, we'll see the roll out in another 18 months.  But then I thought that last year too.  And '06.  And '04......
That pickup in the background is my wife's.  Honest.
